In Paradisum, Op. 30

In March of 2005, the Canadian music scene lost one of its great composers, Dr. Patrick R.T. Cardy. From the time I was in high school, I knew of his name. When I entered the music programme at Carleton University in the fall of 2000, Dr. Cardy was my first-year theory professor. Throughout my two years at Carleton, he would offer me insights on my compositions, and in fact, the score to my Concerto for Soprano Saxophone is marked with his comments and suggestions. I had hoped one day to study composition with him.

Regardless of the short time I'd known him, his passing touched me deeply and I wrote this short piece for SSATB chorus, flute and harp. In Paradisum is dedicated in memory of Dr. Patrick Cardy (1953-2005), Composer, Professor and Friend.

The text and melody are from the Catholic Burial Service.

In paradisum deducant te Angeli:
in tuo adventu, suscipiant te Martyres,
et perducant te in civitatem sanctam Jerusalem.

Chorus Angelorum te suscipiat,
et cum Lazaro quondam paupere
Æternam habeas requiem.
May the Angels lead you into Paradise:
May the Martyrs receive you at your coming
And lead you into the holy City, Jerusalem.

May the choir of Angels receive you,
And with Lazarus, once poor,
may you have everlasting rest.
