This is the third piece that was written for my composition course with Dr. Deirdre Piper in 2002. The assignment was to write a piece in a minimalist style where the background consisted of repeated patterns that underwent subtle modifications throughout the piece, and the foreground was something else that was distinct from the background material.

For the background, I chose five rhythms of different lengths (between one and five bars of 3/8), and had them played on five percussion instruments of very different colors: two congas (one high, one low), one timpano, a cowbell and a high woodblock.

This piece also received its world premiere in our class concert in April of 2002 before an audience of parents, friends and faculty. The soloist was the amazing Ms. Carla Austin, and the rhythm section was comprised of Jennifer Roy and Dave Promane (congas), Kent Siebrasse (woodblock), Kenneth Dawson (timpano) and Leanna Azerrad (cowbell). The performance wasn't quite up to my standards, but it was interesting.
